Use this 13 minute practice as Lori Ferrell leads you in centering prayer.
Centering Prayer is a method of contemplative prayer—silent prayer without words. You are invited to simply be with God—in God’s presence. Christmas is one of the busiest times of the year, whereas Advent invites us to notice our longings for God which requires us to slow down, pause, reflect and simply be with God. Centering prayer helps us practice being with God rather than focusing on our doing. We hope you will try this practice, even if it’s only for a few minutes. Contemplative Outreach has created many helpful tools to help you with this practice including an App (link below).
Here’s an overview of what happens in Centering Prayer.
1. Choose a sacred word as the symbol of your intention to consent to God’s presence and action within. (Examples: Jesus, Immanuel, love, rest, release, peace…)
2. Sitting comfortably and with eyes closed, settle briefly and silently introduce the sacred word as the symbol of your consent to God’s presence and action within.
3. When engaged with your thoughts, return ever-so-gently to the sacred word.
4. At the end of the prayer period, remain in silence with eyes closed for a couple of minutes. (Set a timer for 5 minutes, 10 minutes or even 20 minutes).
We have two ways for you to practice Centering Prayer on Wednesdays this Advent:
1. Live in community, lead by Lori Ferrell on December 4th at 8:00 a.m. MST (10 a.m. EST, time zone converter here)
2. Use this 13 minute practice as Lori Ferrell leads you in centering prayer.
