How to Build a Rule of Life for Cross-Cultural Workers

Mar 18, 2025 | 0 comments

I bet you’re at the point of the year where your life feels a little unwieldy. Even a little overgrown or out of control. You know that something needs to change but you’re not sure where to start.

Enter a Rule of Life.

Better yet, a Rule of Life designed specifically for Cross-Cultural Workers like you. (Available here)

A Rule of Life is not meant to be another time management system or ultimate “whip your life into shape” plan. Instead, it’s more like a trellis that provides a structure on which your life can grow.

Spiritual Director Elizabeth Forshee has created a 12 week program that will help you explore your life and devise your own Rule of Life. She’s created worksheets that can function as devotionals or weekly reflective exercises that are all in one packet. In addition, each piece comes with a short video from Elizabeth so you don’t feel that you are completely on your own during the process.

Great for individual or team use! Get it here.

The plan to build your Rule of Life is simple:

The packet and videos are divided into three parts

Part 1 | Building a Trellis: Exploring if a Rule of Life is Right for Me

You will lay the foundation by exploring how you spend your time. We’ll provide you with a brief introductory video, video for “An Ordinary Day”, and an exercise that involves prayer and noticing that will help you discern whether God is inviting you to commit to establishing a personal rule of life.

Part 2 | Rule of Life: Beginning a Mutually Attentive Relationship

Once a week for 10 weeks, we will provide you with a video to brief video to introduce each week and reflective worksheet to guide you in prayer toward awareness in ten areas of your life: relationships and roles, gifts and talents, desires, vision, mission, time, attachments, body, stewardship, and community. (Ideal for groups to use!)

Part 3 | Rule of Life: Prayer & Creating My Rule of Life

In Week 11, you will watch a short video and pause in the process with an examen called “A Prayer Inspired Rule of Life.” This pause to pray for a week sets the scene to review your 10-week assessment alongside the Spirit in order to attune to God’s will.

In Week 12, you will create your Rule of Life. This final video and worksheet will help you write and commit to a personal Rule of Life for your current season and stage of life and cross-cultural work in which you and God have come together on through prayer.

If this feels like a lot, it shouldn’t. Our hope is that by seeing the overall plan and flow, you are excited for the ways that God is going to meet you during these next three months.
