If you’re not American, you might have heard of Groundhog Day from a movie. Prior to 1993 when the movie Groundhog Day came out, the “holiday”—and I put it in quotation marks because there’s really not much to the day—was mostly a way for Americans to collectively fuss about winter. Lore had it that if a particular groundhog in Pennsylvania saw his shadow that meant six more weeks of winter. Can I tell you how much a rodent and it’s shadow was (and is) talked about in America on February 2nd? Like a lot. Then came the movie sharing a name with the day.
The movie is described as “a charming and heartwarming comedy about an arrogant egotistical weatherman named Phil Connors (Bill Murray) who has a change of heart over the course of a day that lasts a decade. Every morning when he wakes up, it is the same day: February 2nd. No matter what he does, where he goes, and how he tries to change things, it makes no difference.”
Eventually Phil escapes the repetitive craziness of reliving the same day. But the idea of something that is so repetitive you feel stuck in a loop has become associated with Groundhog Day. And what in our current reality might fit that category the world over of “feeling stuck in an infinite loop”?
